Rap icons and Bored Ape Yacht Club members Eminem and Snoop Dogg will perform together at MTV’s Video Music Awards (VMAs) on Sunday. The performance would feature the track inspired by the Otherside metaverse and Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFTs. The Otherside is a collaborative project between Yuga Labs’ BAYC and NFT investment and gaming giant Animoca Brands.
Collaborating with Otherside creator Yuga Labs, the worldwide rap icons will be giving massive mainstream exposure to Otherside by turning the VMAs stage into its style for their latest collab single, ‘From the D 2 the LBC’. Peculiar information about the performance is sparse on the stage.
In what looks like a gesture to the music industry that Metaverse-inspired performances deserve more recognition, the Video Music Awards have added a new segment of the ‘Best Metaverse Performance’ category to the annual awards. The award nominees include Rift Tour (featuring Ariana Grande), Justin Bieber, and Twenty One Pilots.
The VMAs could expect that in embracing the Metaverse, they will be able to expand their flagging viewership numbers. After touching 12.4 million viewers in 2011, the awards have witnessed a constant decline in viewers, with the 900,000 that jumped in live to watch the awards on MTV representing the eighth year in a line that viewership numbers have fallen.
The single points towards the first collaboration between the two hip hop artists in the last twenty years, with the duo nominated for the “Best Hip Hop” award. Eminem and Snoop Dogg are holders of Bored Ape NFTs, and the music video immensely features content from the NFT collection. Snoop Dogg has also recently featured in an EDM single, BAYC by Esther Anaya, in an animated video of Bored Apes alongside other NFTs.
Eminem bought a hiphop ready Bored Ape on Dec. 31 for 123.45 ETH and has a collection of 28 other NFTs named Shady_Holdings. Snoop Dogg is a much more keen player within the NFT space, with a collaboration between him and The Sandbox heading to the NFT collection named ‘The Doggies’ and purchasing a Bored Ape on Dec. 22.
